Alchemical Bodies

Drawing inspiration from her dissertation for her Masters at the Royal College of Art, Lewin examines the body and humanity’s evolution to obsolescence with reference to the ‘Garden of Earthly Delights’ by Hieronymus Bosch. Her sculptural ceramic objects explore the relationship between form, chemistry and process.

Research into the origins of European porcelain, and the alchemists who invented it, references the Victorians cabinet of Curiosities, early microscopic photographs of the natural world by Karl Blossfeldt, and a fascination with early medical and scientific papers – all colliding in her work.

Themes of fragility and impermanence underlie ways in which we attempt to control or deny these inevitable states.
